Waive outstanding order balances

By Steven Van ·

Staff need a new Admin permission, and a Write-offs by order report is available on all stores to track the waived amounts.

Shopify merchants can now waive an order's payable balance from the payment card on the order page when they choose not to collect it. The same page lets staff remove an existing waived amount.

How waived amounts adjust

Shopify adjusts existing waived amounts when needed during order editing, refunds, and returns processing. If the order total falls below the waived amount, Shopify reverses only the excess, starting with the oldest waived amount.

Buyer visibility

Waived balances appear wherever applicable across buyer-facing surfaces, including customer accounts, checkout, and email notifications.

Staff permissions

Staff need the new Waive order balances Admin permission. High-privilege roles, such as Store admin, have it enabled by default.

Write-off reporting

New write-off metrics and dimensions help track waived balances. Write-offs by order, a new default report, is available on all stores.

The change is listed in the Shopify changelog as a new Admin feature.
