Tailwind Labs Is Joining Shopify
Tailwind CSS remains MIT-licensed under the same team, but Tailwind Plus and ui.sh are closing to new customers.
Shopify is acquiring Tailwind Labs, the team behind Tailwind CSS, the utility-first CSS framework installed more than 110 million times a week by companies including ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, and Reddit. In the announcement, Tailwind Labs founder Adam Wathan said the move gives the framework a stable long-term home, developed going forward alongside Shopify's own commerce products rather than as a standalone business.
- Tailwind CSS and Tailwind Labs' other open-source projects stay MIT-licensed, with the same team continuing to lead maintenance.
- Existing customers keep their access to Tailwind Plus and ui.sh.
- Sign-ups for new Tailwind Plus and ui.sh customers are closing as the team shifts its focus to Tailwind CSS at Shopify.
Wathan said Shopify was one of the first companies operating at scale to build with Tailwind CSS, both for its own products and for merchant storefronts, and that the framework is a load-bearing part of Shopify's stack today.
