Pay suppliers internationally from Balance

By Steven Van ·

Eligible US merchants can send local-currency payments to bank accounts in 12 countries through the Balance app on iOS and Android.

Eligible US businesses can now use Shopify Balance to pay suppliers, contractors and other businesses abroad, with recipients receiving funds in their local currency. Transfers are available only through the Balance mobile app on iOS and Android.

Save a recipient, then review the transfer

Merchants first add a recipient’s legal name and bank details, with the app showing the fields required for that country. They then select a Balance account and recipient, enter an amount in either currency, and review the exchange rate, fees and recipient’s final amount before sending.

Estimated delivery is 1-3 business days. International transfers share the daily limit used for US transfers. Merchants can review them in the Shopify admin’s transaction history, but must use the mobile app to send them.

Supported destinations and fees

Transfers support bank accounts in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Every destination carries a 0.75% exchange fee, plus a fixed transfer fee of $0.10 USD, or $0.50 USD for Hong Kong and Mexico. Fees are charged separately from the transfer amount, so they do not reduce what the recipient receives. The recipient’s bank may charge its own fees.

Account eligibility

The feature is not available to every Balance account yet. Accounts without the option to add an international recipient are not eligible. The Shopify Help Center announcement lists the requirements and transfer instructions.
