Admin supports GTIN suggestions and autocomplete.

By Steven Van ·

Shopify checks barcodes against the GS1 registry and offers to mark real GTINs, with bulk accept or dismiss, and nothing blocks saving.

Shopify admin now suggests and autofills GTIN barcode types by checking barcodes against the GS1 registry, the organization that issues GTINs. Sales channels such as Google use GTINs to match listings to the right product.

What changed

  • Autocomplete as you type: when a new barcode looks like a GTIN, Shopify looks it up in the GS1 registry. If it is registered, the barcode is marked as GTIN automatically and highlighted so the change is visible.
  • Suggestions for saved barcodes: saved Custom barcodes that look like GTINs show a suggestion. It can be accepted, which changes the type to GTIN, or dismissed.
  • Registry mismatch notice: if GS1 has the barcode registered to a product, hovering over it compares the vendor and product name with GS1's record. This is informational only, and product titles, vendors and descriptions do not need to match GS1.
  • Bulk handling: in the products and inventory bulk editors, all GTIN suggestions can be accepted at once or dismissed at once.

What stays the same

Nothing blocks saving. Shopify does not change a saved barcode unless the suggestion is accepted, and any barcode type can still be chosen manually, including Custom for internal codes. According to the changelog, the suggestions, autocomplete and registry warnings are only signals, and ignoring them does not affect products or how they are managed in Shopify.
