Notion MCP's Custom Agent tools now explain how to fix broken access instead of just failing. Notion's September 1 changelog entry covers notion-list-agents, notion-search-agents, and the Custom Agent session tools.
- If a workspace lacks access to Notion AI and Custom Agents, these tools now return a prompt with a recovery link instead of a generic permission error. notion-fetch with the id self reports the tools as upgrade_required with an upgrade_url, or as plan_required with a landing_page_url and landing_page_action, so a client can route around unavailable tools before calling them.
- Workspaces with a billing restriction, such as an unpaid invoice, are handled separately: the tools return a permission error asking a workspace owner to manage billing, and current_tool_access reports them as not_enabled rather than upgrade_required.
- A connection that lacks the "View threads and interact with agents" capability does not advertise these tools at all, and must reconnect or re-authorize to get them.
