Notion can now open and import Markdown files

By Steven Van ·

Drag in a .md file to preview it read-only, then import it as a full editable Notion page.

Notion made peace with the format that runs half the developer and AI world. You can now open Markdown files in Notion as a read-only preview, then import them as full Notion pages. ".md, meet Notion," as the announcement put it, and for anyone whose notes, docs, or AI outputs live in Markdown, it removes a persistent bit of friction.

Preview first, import when ready

The two-step design is the thoughtful part. Open a .md file and you get a clean read-only preview, useful on its own for reading a README or a doc someone sent without converting anything. When you want it in your workspace, import turns it into a native Notion page with real blocks, headings, lists, code, formatting, that you can edit like anything else. It respects that not every Markdown file needs to become a Notion page; sometimes you just want to read it.

Markdown is the lingua franca of AI output

The timing isn't incidental. Markdown has become the default output format of the AI era, every chatbot, coding agent, and doc generator speaks it, and a growing number of people keep their knowledge in plain .md files. A workspace that couldn't ingest Markdown was quietly walling itself off from that flow. Now the pipeline is clean: generate or write in Markdown wherever you work, drop it into Notion, and it becomes a first-class page. It's the mirror image of Notion's long-standing Markdown export, the import direction finally matches.

Small feature, real unlock

For creators and teams who use AI tools that emit Markdown (which is most of them now), this quietly wires those tools into Notion. Draft in a chat, export the .md, import to Notion, done, no copy-paste reformatting. It joins Notion's recent agent push (inbox management, iOS agents) as part of making the workspace the place everything lands, whatever tool it came from.

Try it

Markdown open-and-import is live in Notion now, drag a .md file in to preview it, then import when you want it as a page.
