Google Vids adds prompt-based footage editing via Gemini Omni

Workspace users can now fix backgrounds, lighting and messy takes in Vids by describing the change.
Google Workspace put its most capable video model where office workers actually make videos. Gemini Omni is now inside Google Vids, and the pitch is aimed squarely at non-editors: editing used to take hours, now you just ask. Type a prompt to swap backgrounds, adjust lighting, or clean up messy footage, instantly.
Fixing footage, not generating it
What's notable is the job Gemini Omni is doing here. This isn't text-to-video for making clips from nothing; it's prompt-based correction of footage you already shot, the unglamorous fixes that eat an editor's hours. A distracting background behind your talking head, a room lit like a basement, a take that's usable except for one messy detail: those are describe-it problems now. Gemini Omni's conversational editing (the same capability that landed in Magnific and OpenArt this month) keeps the whole scene in memory, so the change applies coherently across the shot instead of flickering frame to frame.
Vids' audience is the point
Google Vids lives in Workspace, which means its users are trainers, marketers, HR teams, and managers making product demos, onboarding videos, and updates, people with footage problems and no editing budget. For that audience, prompt-based cleanup isn't a novelty; it's the difference between shipping the video and shipping a deck instead. It also stacks with what Vids already does: AI generation, screen recording, presentation-to-video conversion, and avatar-led demos.
The pattern across Google this week
Zoom out and Google's July reads as one strategy executed everywhere: Gemini capabilities embedded into every surface where people already work, avatars in the Gemini app, Canva connected to Search, agents in the API, and now Omni editing in Vids. For creators who serve business clients, Vids' upgrade is worth knowing even if you edit elsewhere; it resets what clients consider a reasonable turnaround for simple video.
