Free MIT-licensed dictation for macOS. A shortcut records you, Groq transcribes with your API key, and the text pastes into the app you are in.

About WhisperType

WhisperType is dictation for macOS from Vojtech Rinik, in the repository github.com. The README says it is free and open source. The license file is MIT, copyright 2026 Vojtech Rinik.

Press a keyboard shortcut, speak, and press it again. The transcript pastes into the focused text field, or stays on the clipboard if you have not granted Accessibility access. Transcription uses Groq's hosted whisper-large-v3 model and your own Groq API key.

The README says recordings go from the Mac to Groq and nowhere else. The key is stored in the macOS Keychain. While you record, audio is split into blocks of about 30 seconds at pauses detected on the device, compressed to AAC, and sent as each block is ready.

Custom spellings go along as a prompt. You can pick a language or use automatic detection, keep a history, and retry a failed transcription. It requires macOS 14.6 or later.

The download is a DMG from the GitHub releases. Groq's own charges for the API key are separate. WhisperType does not add a subscription.

Pricing: The app is free and MIT-licensed. You need your own Groq API key. Groq bills that key separately. Checked in the repository README and LICENSE on November 8, 2026.

Pricing model: Free
