Box element and expanded tag selectors

By Steven Van ·

Anyone with the Designer role can use both features on any plan, including Free, with Box also supported through the Designer API and MCP server.

HTML tags are now a setting on a single structural element in Webflow. The update launched on October 13 pairs the new Box element with expanded global tag selectors for setting base styles.

Build structure with Box

Box replaces Div Block, Section, Container, Columns, Grid, V Flex, and H Flex in the Add panel. Its tag can be div, section, nav, header, footer, main, article, aside, address, or figure, and can be changed without swapping the element.

Quick Find accepts searches for box, div, or section, or a specific tag to add a Box with that tag already set. The Navigator shows each semantic tag with its own icon and name. Existing elements keep working but are hidden in the Add panel. A Box set to Div publishes the same output as a Div Block.

Set base styles by HTML tag

Expanded tag selectors cover elements including div, section, nav, header, footer, main, article, aside, address, button, input, textarea, and select. A Box set to section picks up All Sections styles, while All Divs styles apply to a Box set to Div.

The new selectors start empty, so a site's appearance stays the same until those styles are changed.

Designer access and automation

Box elements can also be created and worked with through the Designer API and Webflow's MCP server. The getTag() method checks a Box's HTML tag, including for custom elements.

Both Box and the expanded tag selectors are available to anyone with the Designer role, on any plan including Free.
