Workflow Builder: Build your own workflow automation platform

By Steven Van ·

Vercel's open-source Next.js template includes a drag-and-drop editor, six integrations, and AI text-to-workflow generation.

Vercel has open-sourced Workflow Builder, a visual automation platform built on the Workflow Development Kit (WDK). It's a production-ready Next.js template with a drag-and-drop workflow editor, an execution engine, and infrastructure for building custom automation tools and agents, and it can be deployed to Vercel and customized for a given use case.

  • A visual workflow editor with real-time validation, undo/redo, auto-save, and persistent state, requiring no code
  • Six prebuilt integration modules: Resend, Linear, Slack, PostgreSQL, HTTP requests, and Vercel AI Gateway
  • AI-powered text-to-workflow generation, converting natural language prompts into structured workflow steps
  • Webhook triggers for connecting workflows to external apps and APIs
  • Step output referencing, letting later steps use data from earlier ones for agentic workflows
  • Workflow code generation: every visual workflow compiles into executable TypeScript via WDK's "use workflow" and "use step" directives

Vercel suggests using it as a foundation for internal tools, customer-facing workflow builders similar to Zapier or n8n, agent execution, integration platforms, or visual data pipelines.
