Vercel Container Registry now supports 2 GB compressed image layers

By Steven Van ·

Layers in Vercel's registry can now reach 2 GB compressed, up from 500 MB, while the total image limit stays at 15 GB.

The Vercel Container Registry now accepts compressed image layers of up to 2 GB, up from 500 MB. Larger layers can be pushed without splitting them. The total image size limit stays at 15 GB, according to the getting-started guide.

Where the higher limit helps

Vercel says the change is useful for images with large toolchains or dependency sets. Its example is custom Vercel Sandbox environments for coding-agent evaluations.

Pushing an image

With Docker and the Vercel CLI installed, run these commands from the directory containing your Dockerfile:

  • vercel link links the project, since every repository belongs to a Vercel project.
  • vercel vcr login docker authenticates Docker with a short-lived, project-scoped OIDC token that is valid for 12 hours.
  • vercel vcr build docker . --push builds the current directory and pushes the image.

No repository needs to be created first. The registry creates one named after the project on the first push. A different repository name or tag can be passed as name[:tag].

Pulling an image

Run vercel vcr tag inspect project-name latest to print the full image reference, then pull that reference with Docker, Podman or Buildah.
