Vercel acquires Better Auth to accelerate open source auth

By Steven Van ·

Founder Bereket Engida and the core team join Vercel; the library stays free, open source and MIT-licensed under its own name.

Vercel has acquired Better Auth, the company behind the open source TypeScript authentication library used in more than 4.7 million weekly npm downloads and built by over 850 contributors. Founder Bereket Engida and the core Better Auth team are joining Vercel, according to the announcement, to continue developing the library and its work on agent identity.

Better Auth stays free and open source under the MIT license, keeps its name, and the same team continues to lead development with the same community governance and framework support across the ecosystem. The team's Agent Auth work, which gives each AI agent its own scoped, revocable identity instead of inheriting a user's full access, will extend to Vercel Connect and eve.
