Talha Tariq joins Vercel as CTO of Security

By Steven Van ·

HashiCorp and IBM security veteran Talha Tariq takes on a newly created CTO of Security role at Vercel.

Vercel has hired Talha Tariq as CTO of Security, a newly created role. He previously spent seven years as CISO & CIO at HashiCorp, then became CTO (Security) at IBM following its acquisition of HashiCorp, where he oversaw security across IBM's software, AI, and post-quantum cryptography divisions.

At Vercel, Tariq's remit extends past a traditional CISO scope to include security research, product R&D, engineering, and trust & safety. In a Q&A accompanying the announcement, he said security should be "embedded in product development" rather than operating as a gatekeeping function, and pointed to identity verification and bot detection as harder problems as generative AI makes it easier to impersonate humans.
