Repository checkout and Git LFS downloads are now faster

By Steven Van ·

LFS-enabled projects saw file preparation times fall by 54% during rollout on build machines with more than two vCPUs.

Preparing project files before a build now takes less time on Vercel. The improvements apply automatically, with no action required.

Measured reductions during rollout

On build machines with more than two vCPUs, Vercel reported:

  • A 20% reduction in the average time to get project files ready.
  • A 54% reduction for LFS-enabled projects, saving approximately 13 seconds per deployment on this step.
  • A 22% reduction in the 90th-percentile preparation time, the threshold within which 90% of deployments finish this step.

Using Git LFS

The Git LFS documentation explains that support can be enabled or disabled in project settings. When enabled, Vercel pulls the LFS objects used in the repository. Turning Git LFS on requires a redeployment.
