New monorepo projects now skip builds with unchanged code by default

By Steven Van ·

New projects skip unchanged monorepo builds automatically; existing projects can opt in under Build and Deployment settings, and Terraform 2.10.0 supports it.

Projects newly created in a monorepo on Vercel now skip builds when their code is unchanged. Vercel had previously offered this as an opt-in setting to reduce build queueing, and it is now the default for new projects (monorepo docs).

A project counts as changed if its own source changed, if one of its internal dependencies changed, or if a lockfile change affects only that project's dependencies. Skipped builds do not take up concurrent build slots, which the Ignored Build Step does. The feature is limited to projects connected to GitHub repositories, using npm, yarn, pnpm or Bun workspaces.

Existing projects can turn it on in the Build and Deployment settings. The setting has also been added to the Vercel provider for Terraform in version 2.10.0.
