New execution duration limit for Edge Functions

By Steven Van ·

Streaming responses from Edge runtime functions are capped at 300 seconds, replacing the old open-ended behaviour, though Edge Functions are now deprecated.

Edge Functions on Vercel get a fixed execution limit: 300 seconds for Vercel Functions using the Edge runtime. Vercel said the rollout would begin on March 1st, 2025.

Before this, Edge Runtime functions had no fixed timeout for streaming responses, so behaviour varied with system resources and traffic. Streaming responses will now be allowed for up to 300 seconds, including post-response tasks such as waitUntil().

The changelog entry is now marked as historical. Edge Functions are deprecated for new projects, and Vercel points to Vercel Functions with the Node.js runtime and Fluid compute instead. For request-time routing before a response completes, it points to Routing Middleware.
