Investing in the Python ecosystem

By Steven Van ·

Vercel hires the creators of uvloop and asyncpg and commits to sponsoring the Python Software Foundation and a core maintainer.

The team behind Gel Data, the Postgres-based data platform, is joining Vercel to build out Python support on the platform. The team is led by Python core developer Yury Selivanov and contributor Elvis Pranskevichus, creators of uvloop (the event loop underneath FastAPI, downloaded 3 million times a day) and asyncpg, the PostgreSQL library used widely across the Python ecosystem.

Alongside the hire, Vercel is making a broader commitment to Python:

  • Joining the Python Software Foundation as a Maintaining-level sponsor, with presence at PyCon US
  • Sponsoring Python core maintainer Serhiy Storchaka for one year through the PSF
  • Sponsoring Python conferences and local meetups, and planning a first Vercel + Python hackathon in San Francisco in February

Vercel says it will spend the coming months improving Python framework support and working to make Python deployment as simple and fast as it is for JavaScript frameworks, alongside contributing to the libraries the community relies on. Gel Data itself will wind down on January 31, 2026; Vercel says the acquisition is about Python expertise rather than entering the database market, and Gel's open source components will remain available.
