Introducing Geist Serif

By Steven Van ·

Geist Serif is a high-contrast display face for headlines, available now on npm and as a download in Regular weight, with more weights to follow.

Vercel has added Geist Serif to the Geist type family, which already includes Geist Sans, Geist Mono and Geist Pixel. The Geist font page now lists it as available.

What it is

Geist Serif is a high-contrast display serif built on the same foundations as the other Geist families. It has fine, saw-toothed serifs and sharp hairlines, and Vercel says it was drawn for both physical media and high-density screens. Each serif has a wedge on one side and a curve on the other. To push the contrast, Vercel thinned every downstroke by 50% and tightened the sidebearings.

Vercel describes it as a second voice for headlines, alongside Geist Sans, which runs the product. Its references are fashion, editorial design and magazine headlines, and Vercel calls it a homage to the artists behind Rolling Stone and Harper's Bazaar.

Design and status

The first sketches came from Evil Rabbit, and Andrés Briganti expanded them. Mark Davis then took over the drawings. The first release is a display face for headlines, posters and other large sizes, while work on the full family continues. On the font page, only the Regular weight is available. Thin, Ultra Light, Light, Medium, Semi Bold, Bold, Black and Ultra Black are marked "Soon".

Installing it

  • npm: run npm i geist and import from geist/font/serif. The exports are GeistSerif, GeistSerifRegular, GeistSerifSquare, GeistSerifTriangle and GeistSerifHeart.
  • Variable font: Geist Serif and Geist Pixel can be loaded as variable fonts, with a style chosen through the ELSH axis.
  • Google Fonts: Geist Serif is coming soon.
  • .zip download: otf, woff2 and variable font files, with the full glyph set and font-feature-settings support.

The fonts are licensed under the OFL.
