How we built the v0 iOS app
By Steven Van ·
Vercel tested dozens of prototypes before building its first mobile app in React Native and Expo, and detailed the chat, keyboard, and paste handling behind it.
Vercel built v0 for iOS as its first native mobile app, testing dozens of iterations across different tech stacks and UI patterns before settling on React Native with Expo. The goal was an app worthy of an Apple Design Award, and the team looked to Apple Notes and iMessage for how the interface should feel.
Vercel published a technical breakdown of the build after developers asked how the app achieves its native feel. The writeup covers:
- A composable chat built on LegendList, React Native Reanimated, and React Native Keyboard Controller, with staggered fade-in animations for new messages
- A composer that uses Liquid Glass and floats over scrollable content
- Keyboard handling, scrolling existing chats to the end on open, and pasting images and files into the text input
- Sharing code between the web and native versions of v0, plus native menus, alerts, and bottom sheets
