How Consensys rebuilt MetaMask.io with Vercel and Next.js

By Steven Van ·

Consensys moved MetaMask.io off static GitHub Pages hosting to Next.js and Vercel, rolling out to 100% of traffic in four hours with no rollbacks.

Consensys rebuilt Vercel-hosted MetaMask.io on Next.js after outgrowing a static site on GitHub Pages, where deployments were slow, dynamic content like API events was hard to support, and the CMS couldn't keep pace with internal development.

The new stack uses Next.js with server-side rendering for the frontend, Contentful as the CMS, and Vercel for CI/CD, hosting, global delivery, and observability. The rollout started as a 1% traffic canary and scaled to 100% within four hours with no rollbacks. The live site now serves static assets from Vercel's edge network while Vercel Functions handle dynamic endpoints, and Incremental Static Regeneration and caching let it show live data such as token prices. Preview URLs with inline commenting and concurrent builds also let engineering, design, and content teams work on the site at the same time.

Consensys says the migration improved uptime, deployment speed, Core Web Vitals, and SEO, according to the original announcement.
