Grep a million GitHub repositories via MCP
By Steven Van ·
Vercel's Grep tool gets an MCP server so agents in Cursor or Claude Code can search a million public GitHub repos directly.
Grep, the code search tool built on the same infrastructure as grep.app, now has an MCP server that lets AI apps and agents query a million public GitHub repositories through a standard interface. It works in Cursor, Claude Code, or any client that supports the Model Context Protocol, and returns ranked code snippets filtered by language, repository, and file path, typically in a fraction of a second.
In Cursor, it's added as an MCP server pointing to https://mcp.grep.app; in Claude Code, the command is claude mcp add --transport http grep https://mcp.grep.app. Once connected, an agent can issue queries, including regular expressions, and use the results to answer coding questions or update a project directly.
Vercel says the server was built in an afternoon using its mcp-handler package, which turned Grep's existing search API into a compliant MCP server by handling schema, routing, and response formatting.
