David Totten Joins Vercel to Lead Global Field Engineering

By Steven Van ·

Vercel unifies Sales Engineering, Developer Success, Professional Services and Support under new VP David Totten, formerly of Databricks.

Vercel has hired David Totten as VP of Global Field Engineering, a newly unified organization bringing together Sales Engineering, Developer Success, Professional Services, and Customer Support Engineering. The change is meant to keep the technical relationship with customers consistent from initial evaluation through long-term scaling, rather than resetting as they move between sales and post-sales teams.

Totten joins from Databricks, where he worked on customer engagement and go-to-market strategy as AI adoption grew. Before that, he spent nearly two decades at a Fortune 5 company as a field CTO. Vercel says its own support agent already handles more than 75% of customer cases, and that AI-driven changes to its sales development process cut average touches per lead from 8 to 4 while reducing SDR headcount needs by 90%. The company also says it is investing in Forward Deployed Engineering to help enterprises integrate AI into internal operations and customer-facing products, an effort Totten's team will draw on when advising customers.
