Create custom monitors in Vercel Observability
By Steven Van ·
Custom monitors are in beta for Pro and Enterprise teams with Observability Plus, at $0.0035 per GB scanned, with up to 5 per team.
Vercel now lets teams create custom monitors that send alerts based on Vercel Observability query results. Examples include AI Gateway costs, Core Web Vitals and other performance metrics, Workflow and external API failure rates, and Vercel Sandbox CPU time. The feature is marked Beta in the documentation.
What a monitor tracks
Each monitor tracks either a single metric, such as response time, or a ratio of two metrics, such as errors divided by total requests. For a ratio, the numerator and denominator are separate queries, each with its own metric, aggregation and filters. A monitor applies to one project.
The trigger is either a fixed threshold (above or below a value) or statistical anomaly detection, set as a number of standard deviations from the baseline. The detection window can be 5 minutes, 1 hour or 1 day. The 5-minute window uses a 24-hour baseline, and the 1-hour and 1-day windows use a 7-day baseline. You can also set filters and one "group by" dimension, such as route, path, status code, cache status or region. Each group is evaluated separately and can trigger its own alert.
Creating a monitor
A monitor can be started from a chart's query in Observability, from a preset, or from Settings > Alerts for the team. It can also be defined in a JSON file and added with vercel monitors add. Anomaly alerts and ratio threshold alerts can require a minimum sample size before they trigger.
Notifications
Alerts can go to email, Slack, Vercel Inbox, push notifications or team-level webhooks. The documentation also covers incident.io as a destination. Context can be added for Vercel Agent to use when it investigates an alert.
Availability and pricing
Custom monitors are available on Pro and Enterprise plans with Observability Plus, at $0.0035 per GB of data scanned. Each team can create up to 5 custom monitors. Built-in alerts remain included with Observability Plus.
