CLI archive deployments are now up to 30% faster with split-tgz archive option

By Steven Van ·

The archive option was introduced for CLI deployments hitting rate limits like the limit on the maximum amount of files.

CLI archive deployments on Vercel can now use a beta split-tgz format, which uploads large prebuilt projects up to 30% faster. Run it with vercel deploy --archive=split-tgz.

The --archive option exists for CLI deployments that hit rate limits, such as the maximum file count. Prebuilt deployments often use it because they generate thousands of files at build time. Until now the only format was tgz, which compresses everything into one large file. That can run into the file size upload limit, and one large file uploads more slowly than several parts.

split-tgz splits the archive into smaller parts, which avoids the static file upload limit.

DEK: A new beta archive format splits large CLI uploads into parts, avoiding the file size limit for prebuilt projects with thousands of files.
