Shopify Analytics session measurement improvements

By Steven Van ·

Shopify's updated session measurement filters bot traffic more consistently, so sessions and conversion metrics may shift after September 21, 2026.

Starting September 21, 2026, Shopify is changing how Analytics measures sessions, aiming for a cleaner view of real shopper activity. The default sessions experience now focuses on human visitors where the Human or bot filter is available, classifies bot and system traffic more consistently, and keeps valid shopper journeys visible even when they don't include a standard pageview.

Because of this, several session-based metrics might look different after the update: sessions, conversion rate, add-to-cart rate, reached checkout rate, checkout conversion rate, bounce rate, pageviews per session, online store visitors, and searches. Shopify says this doesn't necessarily mean traffic, orders, or customer behavior changed, and orders, sales, and customer counts aren't affected by the update. Merchants comparing reports from before and after September 21, 2026 should treat the new numbers as a new baseline for session-based metrics. Read more in the original announcement.
