Screen Studio automatically masks sensitive data in recordings

By Steven Van ·

The scan checks every frame for emails, credit card numbers, and API keys; face and avatar masking are still coming.

Email addresses, credit card numbers, and API keys can appear briefly while recording a product walkthrough. Screen Studio now has an automatic masking feature that scans the recording for sensitive information and covers what it finds, according to founder Adam Pietrasiak.

A scan across every frame

The feature analyzes every frame of the video, with email addresses, card numbers, and API keys among the examples named in the announcement. It is intended to find information throughout a recording, including details that appear as the screen changes.

A 20-second recording in about six seconds

Pietrasiak reports that analyzing an entire 20-second recording takes about six seconds on an M3 Mac. That is a timing example for the stated machine and clip, rather than a performance promise for every Mac or recording length.

Face and avatar masking are still coming

Pietrasiak says automatic face masking, including avatars, is coming soon. That capability is a planned addition and should not be treated as part of the sensitive text detection described in this announcement.
