Runway launches Media Router to auto-pick generative models

By Steven Van ·

The tool routes video, image and audio requests to the model that best fits a preference you set once for cost, quality or latency.

Runway is tackling a problem that quietly plagues everyone working across generative media: too many models, and no easy way to know which to use when. Media Router is Runway's answer, the first preference-optimized router for generative media. Instead of hand-picking a model for every request, you define what "best" means once, cost, quality, or latency, and the router selects the right video, image, or audio model for you.

The model-sprawl problem

The generative media landscape has exploded, dozens of video, image, and audio models, each with different strengths, prices, and speeds, and new ones every week. That abundance is a burden: picking the optimal model for each task requires tracking a fast-moving field and re-deciding constantly. Media Router abstracts that away. You express a preference once, and it routes each request to the model that best satisfies it, so you stop managing models and start describing intent.

Preference-optimized is the key idea

The interesting word is "preference." This isn't a router that just picks the highest-quality model every time, it optimizes for what you value on this job. Need the cheapest acceptable result for a bulk batch? It routes for cost. Need the best possible output for a hero shot? It routes for quality. Need it fast for an interactive loop? It routes for latency. That's a smarter framing than one-size-fits-all, because "best" genuinely means different things at different moments.

It mirrors a broader trend

Routers are having a moment, Cursor shipped its own model router the same week, promising frontier results at lower cost by matching model to task. The shared insight is that in a world of many capable models, the meta-skill is selection, and that's better automated than left to constant manual choice. Runway applying it specifically to generative media, where the tradeoffs between cost, quality, and speed are especially stark, is a natural fit.

Try it

Media Router is available in Runway now. Set your default preference and run a batch of varied requests, then check whether the routing lands where you'd have chosen manually, and how much decision fatigue it removes from your workflow.
