Perplexity's Agent API adds a Finance Search tool

By Steven Van ·

The single tool call combines licensed data, real-time prices and cited sources for building financial agents.

Perplexity has launched Finance Search in its Agent API, giving developers a single tool call that combines licensed financial datasets, real-time market data, and cited web sources for building financial agents.

Instead of having the model search generic web results, Finance Search routes requests to structured, licensed data sources and returns cited results in a consistent format. Developers can use it to retrieve prices, fundamentals, transcripts, estimates, and market context without integrating each data provider separately, for things like:

  • A valuation lookup that includes the latest price, segment results, and earnings call commentary
  • A monitor that tracks material changes across balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements
  • An earnings recap that connects reported numbers to management commentary
  • A research assistant that follows estimate changes over time

On Perplexity's benchmark, FinSearchComp T1 (a time-sensitive financial data retrieval test measured after market close), Finance Search had the highest accuracy for live financial data and the lowest cost per correct answer in the cohort. Every result includes inline citations showing which source produced an answer, and developers can choose the model, view token usage, and configure the tool for their application. Perplexity notes that finance teams can also use its separate Computer for Professional Finance product to generate tearsheets, market monitors, and research memos from the same underlying data.
