Best TherapyNotes Alternatives for a Growing Group Practice
By Steven Van ·
Oasys Health's guide weighs six EHRs for 20-plus clinician practices, citing per-transaction fees, manual payroll and a missing export path.
Oasys Health has published a comparison of Oasys Health and five other platforms as TherapyNotes alternatives for growing group practices. It judges each one on what happens at twenty or more clinicians, several supervisees and real claim volume. The post comes from a TherapyNotes competitor and names Oasys as the best fit.
Why practices leave TherapyNotes
The post says TherapyNotes' base price is not the problem: $69 a month for a solo clinician, or $79 for the first clinician plus $50 for each additional one in a group. The cost comes from electronic claims, ERAs and text reminders billed at 14 cents each, with no enterprise tier for large practices. It cites one practice where 23 of 41 seats belonged to trainees who cannot yet bill independently, each charged the full per-user rate.
Other complaints listed:
- Payroll is not modelled. One practice said about 20 hours a week of its billing manager's time goes into building a payroll ledger from TherapyNotes data.
- Few integrations with outside tools, so assessment reports have to be moved into the record by hand.
- Amended signed notes do not produce a full change history, which the post flags as an exposure in payer audits.
- Supervision is a single setting, so an intern and an independently credentialed provisional clinician both get the same forced co-signature.
The export problem
The post names the lack of a straightforward export path as the main reason practices have not left. Group practices often hold eight to eleven years of records, and one practice quoted in the post said it wanted a "99% solution" because it had no interest in making the decision twice.
How the alternatives compare
- Oasys: flat $80 per clinician per month on an annual contract, with no per-claim, per-ERA or per-reminder fees. Supervision is set per role and per supervisor-supervisee relationship. Revenue-split payroll with per-therapist overrides produces the ledger as output. Signed notes that are amended keep a full, auditable change record. The post lists a shorter public track record than TherapyNotes as a limitation.
- SimplePractice: a stronger mobile app and a larger ecosystem, with more freeform, less template-driven documentation. The post says it shares TherapyNotes' gaps on supervision, per-seat pricing and payroll.
- Jane App: strong scheduling and client experience, aimed at clinics mixing mental health with disciplines such as physical therapy or chiropractic.
- Valant: built for behavioral health groups, strong on operations and reporting. One practice backed away after clinicians found the documentation workflow cumbersome, and the post recommends a hands-on clinician trial.
- ICANotes: template and button-driven notes that suit structured psychiatric and higher-acuity documentation.
The post also covers TheraNest in its key takeaways, though the text provided ends before that section.
