Luma Agents can now split images into editable layers

Extracted layers work on generated or uploaded images, letting one element change while the rest stays untouched.
Luma introduced Layers in Luma Agents, giving conversational image editing a structural upgrade: ask the agent to extract layers from any image, whether it was generated in Luma or simply uploaded, and each element becomes independently editable. The pitch is precise: change one element, preserve everything else.
Why layer separation matters for AI editing
Most conversational image editing works by regenerating the whole image based on a new instruction, which risks subtly changing details you wanted to keep even when you only asked to change one thing. Extracting an image into discrete layers, product, background, headline text, and so on, means an edit can target exactly one layer while the rest of the composition stays untouched. That's the difference between 'restyle the background' actually leaving the product exactly as it was, versus a full regeneration that reinterprets the whole scene.
Conversational, not one-shot
Once layers are extracted, the workflow stays conversational: swap the product, restyle the background, rewrite the headline, each as a follow-up instruction in the same chat rather than a fresh prompt from scratch. That's particularly useful for iterative creative work like ad variants or product photography, where the same base composition needs multiple small variations rather than entirely new images each time.

Layers runs on Uni-1, Luma's underlying model, and the feature works on images regardless of whether they were generated inside Luma or uploaded from elsewhere, extending the capability to existing creative assets rather than only content made natively in the platform.
