Grok Imagine's Image 2.0 adds magic wand editing and sharper text
By Steven Van ·
Now live as Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and the iOS/Android apps, ranking No. 2 on both Arena leaderboards.
xAI just gave Grok Imagine its biggest image upgrade yet. Imagine Image 2.0, announced August 7, is now generally available as the new Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and in the Grok iOS and Android apps. The pitch is simple: images you can actually use in real work, not just pretty one-shot generations. The model follows instructions closely, edits exactly what you point at, and it now ranks second in the world in both text-to-image generation and image editing on the Arena leaderboards. For designers, marketers, and anyone producing visual assets on a deadline, this release is aimed squarely at your workflow.
Typography and layout, planned like a designer would
The headline improvement in Image 2.0 is instruction following. xAI says the model plans typography and layout the way a designer would, so dense, multi-part visuals hold together and small text comes out sharp. That matters because text rendering and layout discipline are exactly where most image models fall apart: posters with garbled type, infographics with misaligned sections, product mockups where the label melts. If 2.0 delivers on this consistently, it moves AI image generation from moodboard material to production drafts. The model also preserves what you put in across generations and edits, so a character, product, or style you establish early does not drift as you iterate.
Magic wand editing changes only what you point at
xAI is treating editing as a first-class capability rather than an afterthought, and the toolset reflects that. The magic wand edits the region you select and leaves everything else untouched. Segmentation lets you pick precise areas of an image to change. Background removal exports any subject with a transparent background, ready to drop into a thumbnail, deck, or storefront listing. And multi-ref editing accepts up to 5 input images in a single generation, which removes a lot of manual compositing: think placing your product into a lifestyle scene, or combining a character reference with a location reference in one pass. There is also smart resize, which takes one image and refills the frame across aspect ratios from 1:2 vertical all the way to 2:1 widescreen, so a single asset can cover a Story, a feed post, and a banner without awkward crops.
Templates for product shots, headshots, icons, and game assets
Alongside the model, xAI introduced workflow templates that package common image jobs into ready-made starting points. The lineup covers photo editing, product color changes, editorial product posters, e-commerce and UGC photos, professional headshots, icon and mascot makers, character sprites, game props and UI kits, streaming emotes, and merch mockups. Each template ships with the workflow already configured: you supply the inputs and get a finished result. For solo creators who do not want to learn prompt engineering for every asset type, templates are arguably the most practical part of this release. xAI is also leaning into consistency for video work, showing how a character, her locations, and her props can be generated separately while holding one style from image to image, ready to feed into Grok Imagine's video side.
Second place on both Arena leaderboards
On benchmark standing, xAI claims the number two spot in the world on both the Arena Text-to-Image and Image Edit leaderboards by overall Elo, as of August 7, 2026. Ranking that high in both disciplines at once is the notable part: plenty of models are strong generators but mediocre editors, or vice versa. It also continues a strong benchmark run for the Imagine family, after Grok Imagine Video 1.5 took the top position on the Image-to-Video Arena leaderboard earlier this year.
How to try Quality Mode, and what is coming next
Image 2.0 is live now as Quality Mode on grok.com/imagine and in the Grok apps on iOS and Android, sitting alongside the faster existing mode, so you can pick speed for exploration and quality for finals. API access is coming soon, which is the piece agencies and tool builders will be waiting on given how quickly the previous Grok Imagine models showed up on third-party platforms. If your work involves product shots, branded layouts, or any visual with real text in it, this is worth a hands-on test today.
