Grok's voice mode gets 21 new voices, on iOS, Android and web at once

The consumer apps catch up to the 21-voice roster xAI shipped to its developer API in July.
Grok just got a lot more to say, and many more ways to say it. On August 7, xAI announced 21 brand-new voices for Grok, available everywhere at once: the iOS app, the Android app, and the web at grok.com. It is a short announcement with a real payoff for anyone who talks to their AI more than they type at it, because voice selection has been one of the thinnest parts of Grok's consumer voice mode until now.
21 voices, and no platform left waiting
The notable word in the announcement is "everywhere." xAI has a history of rolling voice features out unevenly: voice mode arrived on iOS first, Android followed, and the web client typically trailed both. This drop lands the full set of 21 voices across all three surfaces on day one, so a conversation you start on your phone sounds the same when you continue it in a browser tab. If you have not tried Grok's voice mode recently, it is a live, low-latency conversation mode rather than simple text-to-speech, and it remains one of the few voice modes with a meaningful free tier on mobile.
The consumer apps catch up to the API voice roster
Context makes this release make sense. In July, xAI shipped a batch of 21 flagship voices to its developer stack, with names like Carina, Orion, Luna, and Atlas, each natively multilingual across 25 or more languages. At the time those were API-only, living in the Text-to-Speech API, the Voice Agent API, and the Voice Agent Builder, while the consumer app kept its much smaller lineup. An identical count of 21 brand-new voices now arriving in the apps and on the web strongly suggests the consumer side is catching up to that same roster, closing the gap between what developers could build with Grok Voice and what everyday users could actually hear.
Why a bigger voice cast matters for creators
More voices is not just cosmetic. If you use Grok to read drafts aloud, rehearse interview questions, or riff on ideas while commuting, the voice you pick shapes how usable the tool feels over long sessions. And for creators experimenting with voice-driven production, the consumer app is now a free audition room: find a voice and delivery style you like in the app, then reach for xAI's developer tools, like the Voice Agent Builder from $0.05 per minute or voice cloning through the Grok API, when you need that sound in an actual production pipeline. xAI has been shipping voice updates at a fast clip, with the Think Fast 2.0 speech model landing in late July, and this release makes clear the consumer apps are part of that push, not an afterthought.
