Gemini adds AI-content detection to Search, and Chrome is next

By Steven Van ·

SynthID checks reach Search now with Chrome to follow, C2PA verification starts rolling out, and OpenAI, Kakao and ElevenLabs adopt the watermark.

Gemini now lets users check whether an image, video or audio file is AI-generated using Google's SynthID watermark, a feature that has been used 50 million times since launching in the app. The same verification is rolling out to Search now and Chrome in the coming weeks: asking "Is this made with AI?" in Lens, AI Mode, Circle to Search or Gemini in Chrome will surface the answer.

Gemini is also adding verification for C2PA Content Credentials, which shows whether a file is an unaltered original from a camera or has been edited, and by what tools. That starts rolling out in the Gemini app today, with Search and Chrome to follow in the coming months.

OpenAI, Kakao and ElevenLabs are now bringing SynthID to more of their AI-generated content, building on Google's earlier watermarking partnership with NVIDIA for its Cosmos video models. Google is also launching an AI Content Detection API on Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, currently available to a group of trusted partners, for spotting AI-generated content from Google and other models.
