Gemini can check a file for Google’s SynthID watermark

By Steven Van ·

Signed-in users can ask Gemini whether an image, video or audio file has Google's SynthID mark, though it only recognizes Google AI content.

Signed-in Gemini users can now ask whether an image, video or audio file carries Google's SynthID watermark. Gemini said on October 27 that the check is available by asking the assistant about a file.

What the check covers

Gemini's Help says the check recognizes Google AI content only. A file made with another company's AI tools is not identified by it.

What a result does and does not show

A missing SynthID watermark is not proof that a file was not made with AI. It also does not prove the file is human-made. The check can confirm Google's watermark when it is present, but it cannot rule out AI generation when the watermark is absent.
