Upcoming deprecation of selected GitHub Copilot models in mid-October

By Steven Van ·

Six Copilot models, including GPT-5.5 and Grok 4.5, retire on October 19th, 2026, with suggested replacements for each.

Six GitHub Copilot models are being retired on October 19th, 2026, across Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions.

  • Gemini 3.7 Flash: move to Gemini 3.8 Flash
  • GPT-5.5: move to GPT-5.6 Sol
  • GPT-5.4: move to GPT-5.6 Sol
  • GPT-5.4 mini: move to GPT-5.6 Luna
  • GPT-5 mini: move to GPT-5.6 Luna
  • Grok 4.5: move to Grok 4.6

For Copilot Enterprise and Business customers, the suggested alternatives are enabled automatically under default model enablement, unless an admin has turned off the global default or disabled the model. If the global default is off, admins can enable the alternatives through model policies in Copilot settings, after which users will see them in the Copilot Chat model selector. No action is needed to remove the deprecated models once the date passes, and GitHub's documentation says Enterprise customers with questions can contact their account team.
