Screen readers can navigate timelines as lists
By Steven Van ·
Available on github.com and GitHub Enterprise Server 3.23, the update also announces how many events load.
Long activity histories in GitHub now give screen reader users more context: timelines announce their list structure, event count and current position as users move between updates.
Move between events
The Activity list contains comments, labels, commits, reviews and other events. In the screen reader guide for issues, GitHub describes navigation with NVDA on Windows: press L to reach the list, I for the next event and Shift + I for the previous one. Each comment is a single list item, and comments remain accessible through level 3 heading navigation.
Hear when more events load
Load more and Load all are items within the Activity list, reachable through list navigation or Tab. Activating either moves focus to the newest event and announces how many events loaded, such as “11 new items loaded”. Previously, events loaded without an announcement.
Availability
The improvements apply to issue, pull request, commit, secret scanning alert and license compliance alert timelines on github.com and GitHub Enterprise Server 3.23. They improve screen reader access without changing how timelines look or behave.
