GPT-6.1 Terra in GitHub Copilot

By Steven Van ·

GPT-6.1 Terra is OpenAI's lower-cost agentic coding model, available to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users across IDEs, CLI and github.com.

GPT-6.1 Terra, OpenAI's newest model, is now generally available in GitHub Copilot. GitHub describes it as designed for everyday agentic coding and terminal work, at a lower cost than GPT-6.1 Sol.

What GitHub says about performance

In early testing, GPT-6.1 Terra solved noticeably more terminal and C# coding tasks than GPT-5.6 Terra. GitHub says it works in focused, consolidated steps on well-scoped tasks. The details are in the supported models documentation.

Availability

The model is available to Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise users. It can be selected in the model picker in:

  • Visual Studio Code
  • Visual Studio
  • Copilot CLI
  • GitHub Copilot cloud agent
  • GitHub Copilot app
  • github.com
  • GitHub Mobile on iOS and Android
  • JetBrains IDEs
  • Xcode
  • Eclipse

Rollout is gradual, so the model may not appear in the picker straight away.

Pricing and admin controls

GPT-6.1 Terra is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing. GitHub points to its "Models and pricing for GitHub Copilot" page for the rates.

Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Business administrators can manage access through the model policy in Copilot settings. Under default model enablement, new models are enabled automatically unless an administrator has turned off the global default or explicitly disabled this model.
