GitHub Copilot models deprecated on October 19, 2026
By Steven Van ·
Six Gemini, GPT and Grok models are gone from Copilot, and Enterprise admins may need to enable the replacements in their model policies.
Six models are now deprecated across most GitHub Copilot experiences, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. GitHub's list of supported models shows the change took effect on October 19, 2026. The deprecations were first announced on September 18, 2026.
Deprecated models and suggested replacements
- Gemini 3.7 Flash: use Gemini 3.8 Flash
- GPT-5.5: use GPT-6.1 Sol
- GPT-5.4: use GPT-6.1 Sol
- GPT-5.4 mini: use GPT-6 Luna
- GPT-5 mini: use GPT-6 Luna
- Grok 4.5: use Grok 4.7
What users and admins need to do
GitHub asks users to update workflows and integrations to use supported models. No action is required to remove the deprecated models themselves.
Copilot Enterprise administrators may need to enable access to the alternative models through their model policies in Copilot settings. To check, an administrator can open their Copilot settings and confirm the policy is enabled for the specific model. Once it is, the model appears in the Copilot Chat model selector in VS Code and on github.com.
GitHub Enterprise customers with questions or concerns can contact their account manager.
