GitHub Copilot app, Universe releases
By Steven Van ·
Projects let Copilot coordinate agents across repositories and recurring tasks, and computer use arrives on macOS and Windows, both in public preview.
Projects in the GitHub Copilot app are now in public preview, alongside computer use on macOS and Windows, as part of the Universe releases. A project gives work that spans several repositories or sessions, or no repository at all, one place for its context, agents and results.
How projects work
A user starts a project, describes the goal and adds context such as repositories, design mocks, Slack threads or notes from a design meeting. Repositories are optional. Copilot then runs as many agents as the work needs, using the models and tools chosen for the job, and brings back results such as pull requests for review. It checks in when it needs input.
Supporting files and folders can be added through the Library tab. Generated artifacts appear under Agent and user-added material under User. For a focused task in a single repository, a session can still be started directly from that repository.
Tracking and recurring work
- The Overview tab groups a project's work into Needs input, Open, Working and Done. Open items show the session status, the pull request, and lines added and deleted.
- Any session can be opened to review its conversation, changes, pull request and plan, or to send direction through Steer this session.
- Project automations handle repeatable tasks, such as creating a promo video whenever a feature lands. They are set up by describing the task and schedule in the project's conversation, and can be edited, paused or deleted from the Automations tab.
Work around the code
Copilot can use context from connected tools such as Slack and Figma to research a request, draft a specification or work through a design. Images can also be generated and edited in chat using natural language.
Computer use
Computer use, in public preview on macOS and Windows, lets Copilot read app content, click controls, enter or edit text and navigate across apps, including those without an API, command-line interface or MCP integration. Copilot asks for approval before controlling an app, and organizations can disable the feature through managed settings. To turn it on, open Settings, then Computer Use, and select Enable Computer Use. On macOS, the Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions must be granted.
Availability
The GitHub Copilot app is available on all Copilot plans. Projects are in public preview and subject to change.
