Bringing Devin Cloud to your terminal

By Steven Van ·

Devin CLI gains cloud handoff, session resume and SSH access to Devin's VM, with free SWE-2 sessions offered until October 8.

Devin sessions that run in the cloud can now be created, steered, resumed and watched from the terminal. Devin added the option to the Devin CLI through devin --cloud or the /cloud command, as announced on its blog.

Handing work off to the cloud

The /handoff command transfers a task from a local CLI session to Devin, which continues on its own cloud VM. After the handoff, progress can still be observed and steered from the terminal as if Devin were working locally. Because the work runs in the cloud, the laptop can be closed while Devin carries on in the background.

Resuming and switching views

Cloud sessions outlive the terminal that started them. devin --cloud --resume reopens any cloud session in the terminal, and a session URL from app.devin.ai can be passed to it. When the terminal is not the right view, /open web opens the current session in the web app and /open desktop opens it in Devin Desktop. The vendor suggests the terminal for steering and the browser for watching Devin's desktop or reviewing a recording.

SSH access to Devin's VM

Devin now supports full SSH access to the dedicated VM it sets up for handed-off work. Running devin ssh connects to the remote machine, where it is possible to:

  • explore and edit source code directly in Devin Desktop
  • launch dev servers and forward ports to test Devin's work interactively
  • copy files between the VM and a local machine using scp

Bringing work back locally

Running /handoff inside a cloud session moves the work back to the local machine. It fetches the session's pull request branch, switches the Git checkout to it, and starts a local session on that code.

Free SWE-2 sessions

Devin is offering free SWE-2 sessions until October 8. To try it, install the Devin CLI with curl -fsSL https://cli.devin.ai/install.sh | bash and run devin --cloud.
