The opt-in instant_interrupt setting lets new input redirect Codex mid-response, alongside terminal, Windows and sandbox fixes.
Codex can now be steered by new input while it is still responding, through an opt-in instant_interrupt setting. It is the main addition in release 0.159.0, which also changes the terminal interface and fixes a number of Windows and sandbox issues.
- Steering: with instant_interrupt on, new input steers Codex during model responses or long-running code-mode calls.
- New sessions: a compact welcome screen and consistent headers, with occasional tips during and after turns.
- Warnings viewer: closing it dismisses the warnings you reviewed. Press k to keep one for later.
- Plans: the transcript can be scrolled while you decide whether to implement a plan.
- Mermaid: native rendering supports more flowchart edges, labels and node groups.
- App-server clients: thread history can be paginated from a specific item.
Fixes on Windows: launches no longer show stray console windows for MCP servers, code-mode hosts and piped commands, and restrictive launchers can fall back to embedded mode. Copying transcript selections now keeps Markdown tables, formatting and significant whitespace, and more terminals copy automatically on selection. Blank sessions keep their drafts when you switch tasks, and threads can be archived and listed before their first turn.
Sign-in and security changes: local ChatGPT sign-in opens the browser reliably, and onboarding offers a shortcut to copy the login link. Approved commands keep explicit filesystem denials, and .aws directories are protected by default under writable roots. macOS TLS access is fixed in network-enabled sandboxes and in remote environments that require proxy access.
Two things were removed: automatic follow-up prompt suggestions (along with the tui.prompt_suggestions setting) and the bundled plugin-creator skill.
