Claude Cowork learns tasks by watching you record your screen
By Steven Van ·
Pro, Max, and Team users can narrate a task once in the desktop app and Claude turns it into a repeatable skill.
Claude added the most intuitive way yet to teach an AI a repetitive job: show it. New in Claude Cowork, you can record your screen while you do a task, talk through it as you go, and Claude turns that recording into a skill it can run again on its own. It's demonstration as programming, no scripting, no prompt engineering, just do the thing once and narrate why.
Show, don't specify
The hard part of automating a workflow has always been describing it precisely enough. Record-a-skill flips that: instead of writing instructions, you perform the task while explaining your choices out loud ("open this, check that, skip it if the field is empty"). Claude watches the actions and listens to the reasoning, then generalizes the two into a repeatable skill. The narration is what makes it work, it captures the judgment behind the clicks, not just the clicks.
Where it lives
You'll find it under Record a skill in the + menu of the Claude desktop app, inside Cowork, Claude's mode for getting real work done alongside you. Once recorded, the skill joins the set of things Claude can just do, so the next time that task comes up you delegate it instead of performing it. It's the same skills concept spreading across the ecosystem (Bolt, HeyGen, Manus all ship agent skills), but created by demonstration rather than authored in code.
Why it matters
This targets the long tail of personal, idiosyncratic workflows that no off-the-shelf tool covers, the specific way you reconcile a report, tidy a dataset, or prep a weekly update. Those are exactly the tasks worth automating and exactly the ones too fiddly to describe. Letting anyone mint a skill by recording themselves lowers the bar from "can you code an automation" to "can you do the task while talking." The usual caution applies: review what the skill does before trusting it on anything consequential, since it learned from a single demonstration.
Try it
Record a skill is available now on Pro, Max, and Team plans in the Claude desktop app. Pick a task you do the same way every week, hit Record a skill from the + menu, and narrate one run, then let Claude take the next one.
