Opus 5.5 matches Claude Fable 5.1 on most tasks, cuts Opus 5's cost by 40%, and adds a saveable rate limit reset for subscribers.
Anthropic has launched Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in its new Claude 5.5 family. According to the announcement, it performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads.
- Input tokens are $4 per million and output tokens $20 per million, 20% less than Opus 5; cache reads drop to $0.20 per million, 60% less than Opus 5.
- Opus 5.5 generates output more than 30% faster than Opus 5.
- Five-hour usage limits are increasing on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans, and subscription users now get a rate limit reset they can save and use whenever they choose.
- Fast mode for Opus 5.5 is available in Claude Code and the Claude Platform at up to 2.5x speed, priced at $8 per million input tokens and $40 per million output tokens.
- On Anthropic's automated behavioral audit, Opus 5.5 scored the best of any model tested so far, and it ships with safeguards similar to those on Claude Fable 5.1, including access through the Life Sciences Verification Program now and an expanded Cyber Verification Program in the coming weeks.
- Early testers described its writing as clearer and easier to follow than Opus 5's.
Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 are due to follow in the coming weeks with many of the same performance, efficiency, and safety improvements.
