Chrome now asks before opening insecure HTTP sites

By Steven Van ·

Google Chrome will ask for your approval before connecting to any site that doesn’t use HTTPS, so you can avoid exposing data on unsafe networks.

Google announced on October 21 that Google Chrome will now ask for your approval before connecting to any insecure HTTP site.

HTTPS encrypts your connection, which stops attackers on unsafe networks from reading or altering your data. HTTP doesn’t. With the new prompt, Chrome gives you a chance to back out before anything is exposed.

Google’s post does not say whether the prompt can be turned off or how it rolls out by platform.
