Chroma is joining Replit to build a context layer for agents

By Steven Van ·

Chroma has signed a definitive agreement to join Replit, bringing ChromaDB and Foundation along while Chroma Cloud winds down over 60 days.

Chroma announced on October 23, 2026 that it has signed a definitive agreement to join Replit. The two companies say they will build the context layer for what Chroma calls the self-driving company, where agents handle more of the work because they know what the organization knows.

Chroma makes ChromaDB, the open-source vector database it says gets about 6 million downloads a month, and Foundation, its newer product for self-improving enterprise context. Both will continue at Replit, whose president Michele Catasta and CEO Amjad Masad were early Chroma investors.

The hosted Chroma Cloud service is being wound down over the next 60 days, and Chroma points affected customers to a wind-down timeline. Open-source Chroma stays under the Apache 2.0 license, with extra code moved in from Chroma's private repositories. The announcement does not give deal terms.
