OpenAI launches Deployment Company, acquires Tomoro
The unit starts with about 150 Forward Deployed Engineers, over $4 billion in backing, and majority ownership by OpenAI.
OpenAI is launching a new business, the OpenAI Deployment Company, to embed engineers inside organizations deploying AI systems. It has also agreed to acquire Tomoro, an applied AI consulting firm, bringing around 150 Forward Deployed Engineers and Deployment Specialists into the new company from day one.
The Deployment Company is majority-owned by OpenAI and backed by 19 investment firms, consultancies and system integrators, led by TPG with Advent, Bain Capital and Brookfield as co-lead partners. It launches with more than $4 billion of initial investment. According to OpenAI, its engineers will work with business leaders and frontline teams to redesign workflows around AI and build production systems, starting with a diagnostic of where AI can create the most value before building out priority workflows.
