Free ChatGPT users get unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna

Plus and Pro users get a unified GPT-5.6 Sol with a reasoning slider, while Free and Go users lose the text chat cap this week.
OpenAI announced on August 6 that GPT-5.6 Sol now powers both Instant and deep reasoning for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, with more factual, focused responses. The bigger headline for most people, though, is at the bottom of the announcement: Free and Go users get unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna starting the next day. For a product that just passed a billion weekly users, removing the text limit on the free tier is a meaningful shift in who gets to lean on ChatGPT for real work.
One Sol for quick answers and deep reasoning
Until now, quick replies and thinking-heavy replies could feel like two different assistants. The updated Sol unifies them: the same model handles Instant responses and deep reasoning, keeping tone and behavior consistent across both. OpenAI says the update makes fewer mistakes on answers that depend on dates, numbers, sources, rules, or assumptions, and reports that responses containing at least one factual error were about 68 percent less common with GPT-5.6 Sol, and 62 percent less common with Luna, than with the previous generation. Sol also trims unnecessary formatting and will push back with a correction when simply agreeing would not help. Plus and Pro users additionally get a slider, on web, mobile, and desktop, to set how much thought ChatGPT puts into each answer. The update applies to the core chat experience, not the Work or Codex products.
Luna makes the free tier genuinely unlimited for text
Free and Go users are moving from GPT-5.5 Instant to GPT-5.6 Luna as their default model this week. Starting the day after the announcement, unlimited text chats begin rolling out, and a Think button for harder questions follows the week after. The fine print matters: unlimited applies to text only, and OpenAI keeps what it calls abuse guardrails in place. File uploads, image generation, and voice retain separate limits. Still, for anyone who has hit the free-tier wall mid-draft, this removes the most common interruption entirely.
Rollout: paid today, free this week, Think button next
The sequencing is fast. The updated Sol reached Plus and Pro users immediately on August 6, across the web, mobile, and desktop apps. Luna becomes the default for Free and Go users over the course of the week, unlimited text chats switch on starting August 7, and the Think button lands the following week, with MacRumors noting availability across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. If you do not see the new model or the slider yet, it is a staged rollout rather than a missing feature, and there is nothing to enable manually.
What the new split means for creators deciding whether to pay
The tiers now divide along capability rather than quantity. On the free side, Luna plus unlimited text covers brainstorming, outlines, rewrites, captions, and research chats without rationing. On the paid side, Sol earns its subscription with steadier facts and the reasoning slider, which is aimed at planning, coding, long-form writing, and decisions where a wrong date or invented source costs you. If your ChatGPT use is mostly conversational text, the free tier just got dramatically more useful. If you publish work where factual reliability is the product, the Sol update is the stronger argument for staying on Plus or Pro. Either way, coverage from TechCrunch and MacRumors frames this the same way: OpenAI is lowering the barrier to entry while sharpening the reason to upgrade.
