OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT will retire GPT-5.5 on October 14, 2026. The model is being removed from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex across all plans, and OpenAI is pointing Codex users toward GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-6 Astra as replacements.
The Codex changelog adds detail: the retirement covers consumer, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, but it does not apply to the OpenAI API. Anyone using Codex with ChatGPT sign-in should switch models before the retirement date and update any saved settings that still select gpt-5.5.
