ChatGPT lets users share custom Pets with a link

By Steven Van ·

On web, Personalization settings now has a "Copy link" option so anyone can adopt a shared pet, no export needed.

Your Pet is ready to meet other builders. OpenAI is letting people share their custom ChatGPT Pets: on ChatGPT web, create a shareable link for your custom pet and send it to a friend, who can adopt it into their own experience.

How sharing works

Per OpenAI Developers' follow-up thread, the flow is a few clicks: create a custom pet, open Personalization settings, and select "Copy link" next to it to generate a shareable adoption link. Sharing is web-only for now, though you can also download the pet's spritesheet to bring it into the desktop app.

From cosmetic detail to distribution loop

Custom Pets started as a small, playful layer on top of Codex: an animated companion, built with the hatch-pet skill, that uses OpenAI's image generation to turn a text description or reference image into a character that shows your AI's status while it works. Community reaction turned it into something bigger, with people hatching pets modeled on Goku, Patrick Star, Clippy, and even AI industry figures like Sam Altman and Dario Amodei. Fan sites cataloging pets sprang up on their own, and OpenAI ran a contest for the top 10 favorites.

Why the shareable link matters

What changes with this release is distribution. Instead of a pet living only inside the account that made it, an adoption link lets anyone hand their creation to someone else with one click, no export, no manual asset transfer. That is a small mechanic, but it is also a growth lever: every shared pet is a reason for the recipient to open ChatGPT and notice everything else that shipped around it. It is the kind of lightweight social loop that has driven adoption for other consumer products, now attached to an AI coding assistant.
