ChatGPT's Chrome extension can now read your open tabs

The Chrome extension gets tab and page context while the desktop app adds URL suggestions and browser history, both rolling out now.
ChatGPT shipped updates aimed squarely at people who live with too many browser tabs open. The Chrome extension and desktop app both got changes that make ChatGPT more useful without having to copy-paste content between windows.
Chrome extension: Side Chat gets context-aware
Inside Side Chat, ChatGPT's Chrome extension panel, you can now ask about a YouTube video directly, reference your open tabs without switching to them, or highlight text on any page and ask a question about it on the spot. That closes a common workflow gap: instead of describing what's on a page or pasting a URL and hoping ChatGPT can access it, the extension can now work with what's actually open in the browser.
Desktop app: smarter URL handling
The desktop app picked up its own browsing improvements: URL suggestions as you type, the ability to revisit browser history from inside the app, and control over how that history is managed. These are smaller, utility-focused changes, but they push the desktop app closer to functioning as a lightweight browser companion rather than a separate window you have to alt-tab into.
Why this matters
OpenAI has been steadily extending ChatGPT's reach into the browser rather than keeping it walled off as a standalone chat window, tab awareness, page context, and history all reduce the friction of getting information from where you're already working into a conversation with the model. For anyone doing research, content review, or multi-tab work, that's less manual copying and more direct assistance. Both updates are rolling out today.
